Formed in 1974, Harvard Management Company (“HMC”) manages Harvard University's endowment and related financial assets. Our singular mission is to help ensure Harvard University has the financial resources to maintain and expand its leadership in teaching, learning, and research for future generations. The endowment is managed by a highly experienced generalist investment team whose members each take ownership of the entire portfolio, regardless of asset class. HMC's operational structure brings a wide range of expertise to our portfolio management. These functions include risk management, legal, compliance, finance and accounting, human resources and administrative services as well as information technology to develop and implement the systems necessary to support our investment activities.



This individual will support the Generalist investment team on legal matters relating to HMC’s private equity and venture capital portfolio. This position requires effective management of diverse responsibilities and high levels of organization and flexibility. The ideal candidate will have experience reviewing and negotiating private equity and venture capital documentation, as well as demonstrated ability to work independently and on short deadlines.



  • Legal support for direct and co-investments into seed, venture, and growth stage startups
  • Review underlying fund documentation, partnership agreements, and offering materials from private equity and venture capital managers, and coordinate review of investment documents with outside counsel as appropriate
  • Review investment terms with Generalist team members and establish a comprehensive negotiation strategy
  • Negotiate all investment-related documents; manage all aspects of the legal process through closing
  • Monitor changes, including through amendments and consents, of underlying legal documentation for each ongoing investment relationship
  • Draft various investment-related legal documents; coordinate drafting of investment documents with outside counsel as appropriate
  • Develop a thorough understanding of HMC in order to facilitate the flow of information within and outside of the department
  • Work on special projects as they arise at the request of the senior team members, as needed


  • Demonstrated success in a similar role in a law firm or investment firm
  • Self-motivation and strong sense of personal responsibility

  • Excellent attention to detail


  • JD required; admitted to practice in Massachusetts
  • Four to six years’ legal experience in and/or exposure to the private equity and venture capital investment industry
