Position Overview: The General Counsel is a member of the senior management team and will serve as the Organization’s chief legal advisor and oversee all functions relating to legal affairs, compliance, risk management, and governance. The successful candidate will be a deeply experienced in-house counsel or general counsel, thoughtful and independent, an exceptional people leader who has a track record of extraordinary success in excellent organizations, and an individual with a strong passion for serving the immigrant community.
Experience: At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience as a practicing attorney in a law firm, non-profit, or education organization. A broad based, generalist background and experience in the following areas: significant experience with a wide range of issues, laws, and regulations affecting 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, non-profit governance, regulatory compliance, public education policy issues; employment law; contracts; human resources; internal investigations, ethics, risk management, pre-litigation and litigation management; and insurance matters. Experience advising the Board is required. Evidence of practicality in policy-making and application, with the ability to translate legal or regulatory requirements into clear policies and clear guidance in plain language that can be successfully enacted. Mission driven attitude, professional presence and the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience.

Bar: Must be licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia or eligible for admission upon hire.
