Job Description

Neufeld Scheck & Brustin, LLP (NSB) (www.nsbcivilrights.com) is seeking to hire a Staff Attorney for an immediate opening.

NSB is a boutique national civil rights law firm based in New York City. Founded over 20 years ago by Peter Neufeld, Barry Scheck and the late Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., NSB currently is lead counsel in approximately 30 complex individual and multi-plaintiff Section 1983 cases throughout the country.  Our constitutional civil rights cases target police misconduct and other types of corruption within the criminal legal system—most commonly, wrongful convictions, excessive force, and abuse of prisoners. Our mission is to use civil litigation to win justice for our clients and hold individuals and institutions accountable. The Staff Attorney would take an active role in all aspects of our practice, including managing discovery & filings in multiple matters and supervising junior professionals, however, travel is not expected.

The applicant must have 5 or more years of prior litigation experience (preferably federal), including with all stages of civil litigation. The applicant should also have exceptional organizational/project management experience, the ability to work independently and with a team, a background training/onboarding and/or serving as a resource to junior attorneys, paralegals, or other litigation support professionals, strong analytical and writing skills, and a demonstrated commitment to civil rights and social justice. The applicant should also be a member of the NY bar or willing to become a member of the NY bar through reciprocity admission.

NSB is committed to serving its diverse clients and ensuring an office environment that is welcoming and respectful to people of all backgrounds. We strongly encourage applicants from all cultures, races, educational backgrounds, life experiences, socio-economic classes, sexual orientations, age, gender, and physical abilities to apply. We welcome applicants with personal or family experience with the criminal justice system and/or incarceration. The base salary for this role will be commensurate with litigation experience and starts at $140,000 (gross) for at least 5 years of civil litigation experience. NSB offers a wide range of benefits including comprehensive medical and dental coverage, a 401(k) plan, a wellness benefit for physical & nutritional health, paid vacation and personal time, paid time off for volunteer service, and a charitable contribution match. As an equal opportunity employer, NSB supports non-discrimination in the firm’s employment practices. We are seeking applications from all candidates committed to holding officials accountable for their misconduct.
