Job Summary

The Legal Department at CHOP is hiring an Assistant General Counsel II. In furtherance and support of CHOP’s mission, the Assistant General Counsel will provide legal counsel and services to CHOP leaders and other stakeholders on a wide range of legal issues.  As the Assistant General Counsel, you will receive assignments and work under the general supervision of more senior attorneys in the Office of General Counsel (OGC). You will be expected to handle simple contracts and other tasks independently, and more complex contracts and tasks with supervision. You will work with increasing independence on complex contracts and other matters with demonstrated mastery. The Assistant General Counsel II will be expected to exercise solid judgment and draw upon prior experience in performing the job responsibilities.  

Job Responsibilities

  • Review, negotiate, draft and/or edit contracts and contractual provisions in varying substantive areas
  • Provide legal guidance and advice to hospital leaders and other internal stakeholders on legal issues that arise in the health care setting
  • Draft, edit and/or review legal documents, in addition to contracts, such as letters, policies, responses to subpoenas, releases, and research memoranda
  • Prepare and present trainings to internal stakeholders on relevant legal issues
  • Demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a passion for learning in understanding difficult issues and considering alternative solutions
  • Provide on-call legal services for urgent and emergent Hospital legal matters arising outside of traditional business hours, such as obtaining court orders to treat
  • Perform such other legal duties as may be assigned from time to time by other hospital lawyers and CHOP stakeholders
  • Draft and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts (including supply chain/procurement, software and other agreements involving vendor relationships, confidentiality agreements, etc.), agreements associated with research collaborations (clinical trial agreements, data use agreements, etc.) and arrangements with community partners
  • Experience in information technology contracting and/or contracts implicating FDA regulatory issues is a plus 
  • Advise internal stakeholders on a range of business-related issues concerning the hospital including procurement, governance and corporate matters, information systems, finance, intellectual property, marketing, community benefits and other matters

Required Licenses

·       License to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or, if licensed in another state, must obtain license to practice law in Pennsylvania within the first year of placement into position.

Required Education & Experience

·       Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school

·       A minimum of 4-6 years of employment as an attorney with specific technical experience in areas outlined above

Preferred Experience

·       At least three (3) years of employment as an attorney with experience in health care law

  • This position requires a demonstrated capability for legal research, analysis and reasoning, strong oral and written communication skills, an ability to identify and resolve complicated and sensitive problems creatively and with professional discretion and an ability to interact and function effectively in a competitive, professional healthcare, academic and research environment

  • The position requires familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field


To carry out its mission, it is of critical importance for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to keep our patients, families and workforce safe and healthy and to support the health of our global community. In keeping with this, CHOP has mandated all workforce members on site at any CHOP location for any portion of their time be vaccinated for COVID-19. This mandate also applies to workforce members performing work for CHOP at non-CHOP locations. The CHOP COVID-19 vaccine mandate is in alignment with applicable local, state and federal mandates.

CHOP also requires all workforce members who work in patient care buildings or who provide patient care to receive an annual influenza vaccine. Employees may request exemption consideration for CHOP vaccine requirements for valid religious and medical reasons.

Please note start dates may be delayed until candidates are fully immunized or valid exemption requests are reviewed. In addition, candidates other than those in positions with regularly scheduled hours in New Jersey, must attest to not using tobacco products.
