Assistant General Counsel – Coverage Litigation (Casualty)

AIG’s Global Legal, Compliance, Regulatory and Government Affairs (GLCR) department is comprised of attorneys and other professionals providing high-quality advisory and transactional support with integrity and objectivity across all parts of the organization. The team ensures an operating environment that minimizes legal, regulatory and reputational risks and complies with all laws and regulations and AIG policies & procedures.

AIG’s GLCR department is looking for an experienced attorney to serve as Assistant General Counsel in New York, NY managing casualty-side insurance coverage litigation and providing coverage advice to the claims organization.  

Job Description:

  • Manage a litigation docket consisting of coverage litigation matters involving casualty policies issued to commercial insureds in all fifty states and abroad;
  • Manage and partner with outside counsel to ensure high-quality written work product is filed on behalf of the AIG member insurance companies;
  • Make strategic decisions with a focus on consistency and the big picture;
  • Proactively develop case resolution plans and recommendations;
  • Evaluate and make smart, sensible recommendations regarding the filing of potential coverage litigation on behalf of the AIG member insurance companies;
  • Collaborate with our business partners in the claims organization on strategic and financial decisions, and to provide coverage advice in advance of litigation;
  • Travel within the fifty states or internationally for mediations, trials, and oral arguments; and
  • Report to an Associate General Counsel, who has close oversight of the matters handled on their team.

Education/Experience:

  • Attorney with at least six years of major law firm experience strongly preferred; 
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials;
  • Admitted to practice in at least one state;
  • Litigation and insurance coverage experience is required; and
  • In-house experience is useful but not required.

  • Willingness to be mentored and trained to meet the needs of the organization; and
  • Sound legal and business judgment.
