Job Description

The FUSE Executive Fellowship is an opportunity to develop and implement unique solutions to a community’s most pressing challenges. For 12 months, FUSE Executive Fellows work within local government to bring innovative approaches to a specific project. Each fellowship is designed to leverage private-sector experience to deliver results that have lasting impact.

Working with cities throughout the country, FUSE Executive Fellows work particularly on structural and system changes that will reduce disparities and accelerate economic recovery by focusing on issues that will have the greatest long-term impact for local residents. Focus areas include living wage jobs, affordable housing, access to healthcare, education/childcare, and justice reform.

FUSE Executive Fellows are placed at the executive level of local government working with senior leaders of departments and agencies. Prospective responsibilities may include thorough data analytics and research, developing enhanced operations and financial models, building change management and strategic planning processes, and/or building broad coalitions to support project implementation efforts.

Previous FUSE Executive Fellows have tackled a range of community challenges. Examples of their work include building an information system to protect renters from displacement in Oakland, criminal justice reform in St. Louis and Washington DC, and implementing a strategy to support immigrants in Los Angeles. 

FUSE Executive Fellows receive ample learning opportunities throughout their fellowship drawing from the best practices of leading for-profit, public and social sector organizations. They also receive hands-on support from a host champion within the local government, as well as an executive coach and the larger FUSE community of staff, alumni and advisors.

 

PROJECT CONTEXT 

America continues to confront a pandemic that has devastating economic consequences. The crisis has especially impacted communities of color, exposing long standing systemic inequities in our country. COVID-19 recovery will likely be slow, requiring innovative local leaders focused on addressing the pandemic’s lingering impact.

The fellowship opportunities are in Atlanta (GA), Houston (TX) Birmingham (AL), New Orleans (LA), Los Angeles (CA), East Palo Alto (CA) and Oakland (CA).

Here are several selected projects by issue area: 

Workforce Development 

The Oakland Economic Recovery Advisory Council has identified new approaches to an equitable economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that will connect at-risk and underserved businesses and workers to critical recovery services.  

Affordable Housing

After experiencing six federally declared natural disasters, Houston is determined to create a long-term business intelligence strategy to make disaster funds better serve low-income communities of color in terms of housing recovery and assistance programs.

Preventative Healthcare 

New Orleans City Health Department is seeking to combat health inequities that were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing a program model that invests in the economic social determinants of health.  

Education

East Palo Alto is working to ensure that all students and families have access to equitable, comprehensive learning opportunities for K-12 and beyond by developing a strategy for addressing gaps and monitoring progress toward improvement, becoming part of a groundbreaking movement to reimagine education in East Palo Alto.

Criminal Justice Reform

In partnership with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute for Justice and Peace, Birmingham is looking for a FUSE Executive Fellow who will work to advance the organization’s mission and reinforce Birmingham’s international position as the epicenter of civil rights discourse. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 15 years of professional experience – preferably in nonprofit, cultural, community-based organizations – with demonstrated success in development and strategic planning
  • Passionate, able to promote and communicate the mission and values of the organization to external and internal stakeholders with requisite sensitivity and nuance
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented leader who can also be an independent worker
  • Excellent community engagement skills, particularly strong background in relationship and coalition building between stakeholders
  • Cross-cultural agility, ability to relate to a wide variety of diverse audiences with strong emotional intelligence and empathy
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with an ease in public presentations
  • Superior critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise recommendations
  • Ability to sustain progress within potentially ambiguous environments
  • Understands the need for solutions to support all people in a community regardless of race, religion, gender, immigration status, or ethnicity
  • Track record of success in resource identification and management, across a variety of areas (i.e. building public-private partnerships, winning grants, philanthropic support, talent pipelines)
  • MBA or background in management consulting
