Head of Research Services, Library, School of Law

 

The Arthur J. Morris Law Library at the University of Virginia School of Law seeks a highly qualified, collegial, and forward-thinking professional to serve as the Head of Research Services. The successful candidate will be an expert at legal research who thrives on providing stellar service and work product to support the complex and varied scholarly interests of a top-tier law school community. Reporting to the Director of the Law Library, the Head of Research Services will provide leadership in the development of library services, talent, and collections. With overall responsibility for the management of research and reference services, they will act as coordinator, coach, and mentor for a team of skilled research librarians, and will directly supervise several team members. They will also contribute their teaching talents to the library’s instructional team, and they will teach a course in advanced legal research each academic year.

 

As a senior member of the Law Library management team, the Head of Research Services will work closely with the Director to develop, evaluate, and implement library policies, procedures, strategic, and change management plans, especially at their intersection with research services and collection development. They will closely follow the scholarship and teaching interests of faculty and will maintain expertise in trends in legal research, legal scholarship creation and impact evaluation methods, and the legal publishing environment. They will develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the Law School and the University as well as with peers across the profession.

 

This is a Senior Professional Research Staff position with the classification of Research Scientist. 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and M.L.S. or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library school; both degrees must have been awarded prior to the start of employment.
  • Five or more years of progressive responsibility as a research librarian in an academic law library.
  • Expert knowledge of legal bibliography and research methods.
  • Deep commitment to the Law Library’s mission of providing exceptional and timely research and other service to high-achieving faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to think strategically about research services, programs, and collections as the needs of the Law School community evolve.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and act as a team builder and mentor.
  • Ability to foster a supportive, productive, effective, and efficient work environment.
  • Commitment to workplace equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Excellent instructional ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving and project management skills.

  • Proficiency with technologies and software applications commonly used in academic law libraries, such as ILS, discovery tools, research databases, and business productivity software such as MS Office.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten or more years of academic law library experience, including three or more years of successful supervisory experience.
  • Experience in teaching advanced legal research.
  • Record of contribution to the law library profession, as through publishing, presenting, and/or leadership success.

 

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
