THE IMPACT YOU CAN HAVE:

 

As Counsel II-Employment, you will partner with the Senior Counsels-Employment and other members of the Legal team to provide legal support to Human Resources and other business teams at Ulta Beauty. This includes day-to-day employment law advice and counseling, wage and hour compliance support, benefits direction, and risk management guidance. The Counsel II-Employment will also be responsible for managing outside counsel with respect to charges of discrimination, demand letters and employment litigation, as well as assisting with/managing commercial litigation, as needed.

 

The ability to develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with business partners at all levels across the enterprise as well as with colleagues on the Legal Services team is a must. The ideal candidate for this role will have in-house and/or law firm experience supporting retail businesses, strong business acumen, excellent counseling skills, the ability to take a strategic and business-focused approach to complex employment issues and an entrepreneurial mindset. This is a unique opportunity to join an outstanding in-house legal team and work at one of the nation’s fastest growing beauty retailers.

 

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Manage employment-related claims and litigation including the management of outside counsel
  • Handle discovery for litigation matters including collecting and reviewing documents, providing guidance to outside counsel and engaging in strategy discussions with outside counsel
  • Deliver high quality, cost-effective legal advice to the company in the area of employment law
  • Provide accurate and timely guidance on a wide range of employment-related areas, including leaves of absence, investigations, hiring/discipline/terminations, wage and hour compliance, and benefits in order to manage risk across the business
  • Stay on top of constantly changing federal, state and local labor and employment laws throughout the country
  • Review and update policies and guidelines as needed in partnership with Human Resources and other business units
  • Review bonus plans, compensation guidelines, summary plan descriptions and separation agreements
  • Draft, review and negotiate employment related documents in support of business objectives
  • Prepare training modules on a range of employment-related topics

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage projects and matters from inception through resolution and implementation
  • Deliver all legal services using a consultative approach and model accountability and responsiveness by communicating proactively and meeting service commitments timely
  • Develop relationships across the Company and externally that enable you to be a true strategic partner to Ulta Beauty’s business teams – become a “go-to” Legal Services team member
  • Maintain a focus on cost control and operational excellence in implementation of specific objectives supporting strategic imperatives. Provide services within established budgets and communicate project costs to business partners for transparency
  • Support special projects as assigned by the Senior Counsels including but not limited to compliance, litigation management, reporting and other strategic projects

THE ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESS:

 

Qualified candidates will possess a JD and excellent academic credentials.  Additional requirements include:

 

  • Admitted to practice in the state of Illinois (for remote candidates admitted to practice law in states other than Illinois will be considered)
  • 5 - 10+ years of relevant legal experience in a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department (combination is preferred)

 

Job Skills/Competencies:

  • Litigation and litigation management experience (experience with litigation in California is a plus)
  • Demonstrated functional and technical expertise in all employment related legal practice areas related to the business and employees of a large national retailer
  • Experience writing statements of position for charges of discrimination, participating in mediations and handling/managing litigation from start to finish
  • Experience drafting, negotiating and implementing employment related agreements, policies, guidelines and related documents
  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple matters simultaneously and flexibility to shift focus and priority as business needs change while also consistently maintaining strong attention to detail, accuracy and quality
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise outstanding judgment, meet concurrent deadlines and manage time effectively
  • Positive energy, enthusiasm, flexibility, confidence, and ability to work collaboratively as well as cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment are a must

 

Other position requirements:

 

  • Employment law experience with retail corporation(s) preferred
  • Some travel may be required
