Job Summary:

The Career Counselor is a part-time position in the Office of Career Services at SMU Dedman School of Law. This position is 20 hours per week, twelve months per year. The law school will also consider a nine- or ten-month per year appointment at a pro-rated salary. The Career Counselor will work with International and Tax LL.M. students, developing job opportunities and advising on career issues. This person will also compile and create resources for JD alumni on career issues. This person will develop and offer innovative programs for these audiences to support them in their professional development and job searches. 

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as career counselor to International and Tax LL.M. candidates. Develop opportunities for these students to obtain practical legal experience in American legal settings. Educate students about bar examination requirements in Texas, New York and other states. Advise students about work options, considering visa restrictions. Develop and conduct programs and small events for this audience.
  • Provide career counseling to JD graduates, including interview preparation and advice on job search techniques and leads/contacts for potential jobs. Develop and execute programs and small events for this audience on topics such as switching to another area of practice, re-entering the legal market after time off, etc.  And other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

Education and Experience:

A Juris Doctor degree and three (3) years of law practice required for this role.  The candidate must be a licensed in at least one U.S. state.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The ideal candidate will have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with a strong customer service orientation.  Problem solving, time management, attention to detail and project management skills are all key for this role.  Organizational and planning skills are a must.

Candidate should be skilled in cultural competency and have experience working with individuals from a wide array of backgrounds.

A working knowledge of Microsoft Office products is required.

Physical/Environmental Demands:

This position requires the ability to sit for long periods of time.
