Introduction

The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Prince William County and the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park anticipates three openings for a full-time Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney to handle the prosecution of criminal cases beginning July 1, 2021.

ABOUT THIS ROLE
This is an at-will position that serves at the pleasure of Amy Ashworth, the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Ms. Ashworth is one of a number of progressive chief prosecutors in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 

An Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney is primarily responsible for handling day to day prosecution of cases in District Courts and Circuit Court that are not otherwise assigned, including trials of a wide variety of misdemeanors and felony cases, preliminary hearings, motions dockets, and appeals, as well as serving as "Duty CA" and responding to calls and questions from citizens, police officers and defense attorneys at the front desk. Duties include attending trainings and ride-alongs with police officers and engaging in public activities to connect as active members with the community we serve.

PREFERENCES
The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctorate degree and a strong interest in Criminal law. Some experience as a criminal prosecutor or criminal defense is preferred. Must be a member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing. Criminal prosecution/defense experience desired but not a requirement. We seek a candidate that can work cooperatively with the police departments in our jurisdiction, can manage a large caseload, has a zealous work ethic and proven ability to work with a team. A successful candidate must have a strong interest in advocating for the community’s best interest in a variety of crimes, including property offenses, driving offenses, Driving While Intoxicated, Domestic Violence, and offenses involving juveniles. The ideal candidate will be familiar and comfortable with computer systems and productivity software including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Experience using Prosecutor by Karpel is ideal.
