Job Description

NYPIRG Consumer Program Attorney -- NYC

The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) seeks a Consumer Program Attorney to direct the day-to-day operations of the Small Claims Court Action Centers (“Action Centers”), play a leadership role in NYPIRG’s consumer protection policy work, and implement the organization’s multi-issue program work on the New York City campus where they are based.

Qualifications

This position requires a law degree or equivalent and admission to the New York State Bar or admission pending after passage of the bar examination. A background in consumer advocacy, planning and presenting public education workshops in a variety of settings, and issue or political organizing are desirable background for this multi-faceted position. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

NYPIRG’s Action Centers

NYPIRG is New York’s largest student-directed nonpartisan, nonprofit research, and advocacy organization, with almost fifty years of training college students and impacting consumer protection, environmental preservation, political reform, voting rights and social justice issues.

The Action Centers are a consumer rights and economic justice project providing New Yorkers information, assistance, and counseling with consumer problems and in using the small claims courts. The Action Centers operate throughout the year and are staffed primarily by undergraduate volunteers and interns drawn from our diverse campus chapters across the state. Action Center counselors do not provide legal advice or representation and there is no means test for the free services furnished. Outreach is targeted to traditionally bypassed communities to expand access to the courts for low- and moderate income New Yorkers.

Action Center counselors explain the small claims process, provide tips on using the courts and offer referrals to government and nonprofit agencies and the private bar. NYPIRG typically runs Action Centers out of some 17 campus chapters. The day-to-day activities of the Action Centers are overseen by the relevant staff based on a particular campus with the Consumer Program Attorney providing project planning, training and back up for staff and students and coordinating Action Center activities.

Consumer Program Attorney Responsibilities

The Consumer Program Attorney would be the lead staff person responsible for directing and coordinating the Action Centers. Duties include:

  • Updating the counselor training and reference manual
  • Creating new public education and outreach materials
  • Overseeing counselor recruitment, training, and counseling quality oversight
  • Cultivating relationships with bar associations and local service providers to generate client referrals and increase call volume
  • Developing a web-based case management database and reference guides and materials
  • Conducting surveys of local courts to monitor public access and court functioning
  • Engaging college pre-law departments, political science departments, and career placement staff to create a robust counselor applicant pool.

Salary & Benefits

The Consumer Program Attorney position has a starting annual salary range of $60,000 to $69,999 commensurate with experience and includes a health benefits package, two weeks paid vacation and sick days.
