Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Associate General Counsel-FGP. In this role, the Associate General Counsel-FGP will join a team of attorneys and legal professionals within the Office of General Counsel that provides contracting and legal support to the NYU Langone Faculty Group Practice (FGP) and its ambulatory network, one of the largest physician groups in the New York metro area with over 3,100 employed physicians across 350+ locations throughout New York City and Long Island.

Reporting to the Vice President for Ambulatory Network and Associate General Counsel, the responsibility of this role is to provide competent, timely legal advice, assistance and service to coordinate and manage legal activities related to the FGP and its ambulatory network, with particular focus on physician integration initiatives. In addition, the Associate General Counsel-FGP will assist in ensuring FGP activities remain in compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulations. This position offers a partial remote work option during the pandemic.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review and negotiate agreements with respect to physician recruitment and employment, professional services, physician practice acquisition, affiliation, space leasing, licensing, asset purchase and clinical network development, ensuring consistency with business terms and objectives and compliance with NYU Langone Health policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform principal legal and factual research necessary to draft and analyze contracts, policies and other documents and provide legal advice in connection with physician integration initiatives.
  • Advise designated leadership, administrators and business personnel on regulatory healthcare issues arising from the ambulatory practices and affiliations with external medical groups and hospitals (including but not limited to, Stark and Anti-Kickback, HIPAA, physician reimbursement, false claims and corporate practice of medicine).
  • Provide counsel and assistance on a variety of healthcare legal matters related to the operation and management of the FGP and ambulatory network, including patient care, government audits and investigations, physician performance and misconduct, physician separation and settlements, restrictive covenants, vendor contracting, subpoenas and other third party requests.
  • Collaborate and consult with other Legal Department attorneys and outside counsel as needed to assist with and oversee legal matters for the FGP.
  • Coordinate with the FGP legal teams Director of Physician Services to assign, direct and oversee work of and provide mentorship and coaching to FGP legal team contract specialists.
  • As requested, provide training to FGP and Clinical Affairs administrators in relevant legal areas.
  • Assist in promoting efficiency by creating legal templates, forms, instructional materials and other tools and resources.
  • Work on multiple assignments simultaneously and meet tight deadlines on an independent, self motivated basis and with a wide variety of business personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • To qualify you must have admission to the New York Bar with at least five (5) years of experience in healthcare law at a law firm or in-house.
  • Experience drafting, negotiating and advising on healthcare agreements, including employed and contracted physician arrangements and / or agreements relating to the management and operation of physician group practices.
  • Expertise in regulatory and transactional healthcare matters.
  • Thorough knowledge of New York State and federal healthcare laws, including Stark and Anti-Kickback laws as applied to provider contracting.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, strong research and legal interpretation abilities and an exceptional client service orientation.

Required Licenses: Bar Association - NYS

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as legal counsel in an academic medical center or hospital system.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
