The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of Alaska provides legal representation throughout the State of Alaska to people charged with federal crimes. In addition to the direct representation of appointed clients in federal trial courts, we provide legal services for clients at the appellate and post-conviction “habeas” levels. Our office also administers the appointment and routine training of Criminal Justice Act panel attorneys in the District of Alaska to provide further support of indigent rights. We strive for a client centered collaborative approach, embracing open communication among all staff, exploring new ideas and approaches, and fostering a strong work ethic.
Alaska - “The Great Land” - has an area of 663,300 square miles. It is the largest geographical federal judicial district in the United States and covers an area three times the size of Texas. We have typical federal cases like guns, drugs, fraud, cybercrime, and child pornography, but we also have wildlife and environmental prosecutions under the Lacey Act, the Clean Air Act, and a host of environmental protection laws.
Our office is in Anchorage; we have satellite offices in Fairbanks and Juneau, and our attorneys travel on a regular basis. We are an office of trial attorneys, and routinely litigate motion work and take cases to trial. Our attorneys are collaborative, creative, passionate, and supportive. We have very little turnover and a high degree of work satisfaction.
The District of Alaska promotes a healthy balance between work and personal time and encourages employees to take advantage of what our amazing state has to offer. From hiking to skiing, and fishing to camping, there are endless opportunities for adventure in Alaska. There are about 300 miles of hiking trails in the Anchorage area alone!
Not only does Alaska provide endless adventures in the great outdoors, our local community of attorneys hails from all over the country and are especially collegial. Without a law school, our bar candidates often relocate and form tight knit communities through their work connections. Alaskans are hardy and friendly and funny; if you are looking to join a team of zealous defenders and have a unique adventure in the land of the midnight sun, this is the place for you!
