The Center for Law and Education (CLE) strives to make the right of all students to quality education a reality and to enable communities to address their own education problems effectively, with an emphasis on assistance to low-income students.
For over 55 years, CLE has been a national leader in education equity, working to ensure that all students—especially those from low-income families—have meaningful access to high-quality public education. CLE advances its mission through legal and policy advocacy, targeted litigation, and direct support to attorneys representing students in education-related matters.
CLE’s work includes enforcing and shaping key laws like Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, IDEA, and civil rights statutes protecting students by race, language, and disability status. CLE also supports systemic reform by collaborating with communities and educators to promote inclusive school practices, train advocates and legal professionals, and publish resources that integrate education research with law and policy.
CLE’s impact includes landmark litigation and major policy wins that have transformed federal education statutes, protected students’ rights, and held school systems accountable for discriminatory practices. CLE continues to serve as a vital legal and policy partner in ensuring the promise of high-quality public education for all.
